DNS Advanced Exercises

In the initial DNS exercises (see Part 7 and 8: The Network Layer) you have learned about the basics of DNS. However, DNS offers more and you can find out more about the Internet using DNS.

In this exercise you again use CyberKit. In case you have not done the following please do: install CyberKit you have to download the cyber.zip file, unzip it and go through the setup procedure:

Type of Search Options

For DNS queries you have to select the 'NS LookUp'-tab of the CyberKit application. In the 'Type of Search'-field you can select options like:

Advanced use of DNS

Although it is outside the scope of this exercise, you can find out many more things about Internet Hosts using the DNS Service Provider. All you have to do is select different options in the 'Type of Search'-Field.

An interesting options is to find the email-server of a particular domain. For this you select the 'Type of Search'-option: 'MX - Mail exchange'. Once you have selected this option you have to fill in the 'Name Server'-field, possible options are:

Now everything is in place to find the email server of a particular domain.

Finding email servers

Find the friendly name of the email-serve of Internet Service Provider Wanadoo (the domain name is wanadoo.nl).

What is the IP address of Wanadoo's email server?

What is the email server of Het Net (the domain name is hetnet.nl).

What is the IP address of the Het Net's email server?

Finding the email server of your ISP

You probably have access to the Internet via some Internet Service Provider (this could be Wanadoo or Het Net). You can find out the email server of your ISP.

What is the Email server of your ISP?

What is the IP address of the email server.
