Now that you now about DNS, you can do Traceroute experiments using firendly names. To get results also showing friendly names you should set 'Resolve IP Addresses' on.

The IETF server

As a first exercise, do a traceroute to the IETF server. The friendly name is www.ietf.org.

Some more WWW-server

Do a traceroute to the next WWW-servers:

• www.w3c.org (the World Wide Web Consortium)
• www.surfnet.nl (the SURFnet web server)
• www.ptt-telecom.nl (the web server of the Dutch PTT)
• www.ns.nl (the web server of the Dutch Railways)
• www.vvv.nl (the web server of the Dutch Tourist Information)

Domain names and Traceroute

As you have learned, friendly names are convenient to use but they donot give guarantees where the routers or host are exactly located. E.g. friendly names ending with .nl suggest that you have to deal with a Dutch WWW-server. However, it doesnot mean that this server is physically located in the Netherlands.

Find out where the following WWW-servers are located:

• www.heineken.nl (the web server of the world famous beer brewer)
• www.nvm.nl (the web server of a Dutch real estate broker association)

Your favorite sites

You probably have some favorite sites, try to check out where these servers are located and how many hops are needed to reach them.
